Radio Sport National Men's Open Club tournament being played at Rosedale Park, North Shore City. Player-coach Donny Hale batted his side to a record triple-triple of trophies when he hit two home runs in the final two games for his Mt Albert Ramblers’ side at Rosedale Park yesterday.
The big international has player-coached his club to three successive Auckland and national titles as well as doing the same for the Auckland national league side. No other Auckland men’s club has ever won three nationals in a row.
In the semi-final Hutt City United had scored two in the first through Tyson Byrne, Mike Telfer and Jeremy Manley and Ramblers, lacking the batting form of the previous four days, only sneaked one back in the fifth after Hutt’s solitary error.
But minutes later, in the same inning, Hale came to bat with Nathan Nukunuku and Bobbie King on base and slammed a huge home run out to the clubrooms to steal the game.
Wellington side Miramar downed Christchurch United 4-0 after taking an early lead through an error. Stephen England hit well to start the sixth, being hit home by Wayne Laulu. Frank Pointon hit a home run to clinch the win.
Miramar, without a title for 16 seasons after eleven previous wins, went into the final in a determined mood but could not hit against the outstanding pitching of Ramblers’ guest player Terence Hibbert, a B grade pitcher with Hutt club Wainiuomata. Hibbert confined Miramar to only three hits in a shut-out 3-0 Ramblers’ win.
Hale broke the deadlock in the fourth with another huge home run on to the road but the game was tight until Bobbie King won a walk in the sixth and Nukunuku lobbed a hit over second base. In came pinch-hitter Thomas Cameron, the regular pitcher who was struggling with groin strains.
He hit short towards second base and the runners sprinted home as the ball was muddled under pressure. It was brilliant running and worthy of the final.
Ramblers has now won five of the last seven finals and Hale is determined to be back to “build a dynasty of winning teams in the club.” The Sport Auckland coach of the year in 2008, he has once again proved that his policy of developing quality and spirit is working.
He and assistant coach Nukunuku are now preparing for the world championship defence in the winter.
