Financial Sustainability

Financial Sustainability

Many sport and recreation clubs operate with limited finances and need to raise additional funds through fundraising, sponsorship or grants.
While there is often money available through local businesses, charities, sport and recreation governing bodies and government agencies, clubs and other groups also compete for that money.
This section of the website will provide you information on the below

Profile a club or Assn that has been successful with fundraising & sponsorship.

Fundraising & Sponsorship
The club should consider appointing a dedicated fund-raising person or establishing a fundraising committee.

The role of a fundraising person/committee is to:
  • decide which of the club’s projects or activities need additional funding
  • develop a fundraising plan.
  • identify potential sources of funds e.g. sponsorship, or grants
  • write the grant application or sponsorship proposal
  • ensure the funds raised are used for the designated purpose
  • maintain relationships with donors, grant agencies, and sponsors

Breaking down Sponsorship?
Sponsorship is when businesses and companies provide funds, resources, or services to a club, in return for rights and/or associations with the club. These rights or associations help the business commercially.
There are 2 types of sponsorship; marketing sponsorship or Corporate sponsorship.
Marketing sponsorship promotes products and services to very specific target markets, or niche markets.
Corporate sponsorship is the provision of cash or ‘in kind’ services for an independent activity not directly related to the company’s normal business.

Who to approach for sponsorship:
Club members, family & friends
Local businesses & suppliers
Larger organisations

Sponsorship proposals
The sponsorship proposal is an offer to do business. It is extremely important that it is a well-presented and concise business document that contains enough information for a company to understand what they are being offered.
Tailor the proposal to the individual needs of the company being approached. Do your homework. Find out as much as you can about the business you are approaching, e.g. its desired image, products and services, its corporate objectives.

For further information on what should be included in your sponsorship proposal, refer to the below downloads section.

Breaking down Fundraising
Fundraising is the process that your club undertakes to secure additional funds.

Fundraising shouldn’t be considered to pay for the everyday operational costs of the assn or club; rather it should fund special activities such as new buildings, special events, overseas team trips, and new programmes or projects.

A plan of action needs to form when wanting to raise funds, so you need to form or get the fundraising committee to meet to;
  1. Determine the amount you wish to raise
  2. Compile a time frame
  3. Review any past successes
  4. Remember enthusiasm counts - If you’re enthusiastic about something, you’ll be more motivated to sell and get people involved.
  5. Uncover any hidden talents and resources of club members, friends, relatives and associates.
  6. Promote your fundraiser in the appropriate places
  7. Make sure you have obtained all the necessary permissions and have covered all regulations (i.e.: council regulations, alcohol laws etc)

Gaming Machines & Funding

Grants are a valuable source of finance for activities, events and facilities.

In New Zealand, gaming machines have been permitted to operate since 1988. Their number and popularity have grown considerably during this time and there are now more than 20,000 such machines operating in this country. These are all owned and operated by trusts that are legally bound to direct funds to the community and more than $300 million per year is allocated to sporting, educational, health, and arts groups and other charities.

To help you successfully apply for a grant, follow these steps:

  • Guidelines and forms

Carefully read all the guidelines and application forms before you start to fill them out. Make sure your project fits the guidelines.

  • Discuss requirements

Talk to the funding body about the requirements. Check the program target group and whether there are any new or expanded services available.

  • Canvass support

Get support from other organisations and explore local political support if necessary.

  • Deadlines

Be aware of, and adhere to the application deadline. Double check your application – have you attached all relevant supporting material?

  • Confirmation

Get confirmation from the funding agency that your submission has been received.

  • Successful applicants

If you are successful, keep the funding up to date with the progress of the project. Acknowledge the funding agency on signage or promotional material.
