Loss of early pioneers
Loss of early pioneers in the women's game on both sides of the Tasman.
News has been received recently of the passing of Betty Bridger in Auckland and Merle (Shorty) Short in Australia.
Betty Bridger was an influential player and administrator in Auckland and on the national scene through the 1940's and into the 50's. Captain of the Richmond team, regular Auckland Champions, Betty also captained Auckland and made the New Zealand team in 1946-47. On the administration side of the game Betty was amember of both the Auckland and NZ Executives.
Merle Short was well known internationally holding the position of manager with the Australian Women's team for 18 years through to the 1978 World Championship. Inducted to the Hall of Fame both In Australia and at ISF level Merle will be well remembered by many within New Zealand softball.
