Evergreen Tourney Bowls
The Evergreens Bowls adjunct was formed in 1992 as a result of a Meeting between, Alf Whelan, Ken Jones and Jack Shanks of Auckland, and Ray McRandall, Peter Campbell, Vern Hunt and Bob Neely of Wellington.
The idea of starting an annual Bowls Tournament for the Softball "Old Timers" grew out of the fact that a lot of the original Evergreen Softball Players were getting on in years, and were no longer taking the Diamond.
It is interesting to note that a number of the men who started up the Bowls, were also instrumental in the forming of the N.Z. Evergreens Softball Association.
It was decided to play the Tournament annually alternating between Bowling Clubs in Auckland and Wellington.
The first two day Tourney took place at the Rocky Nook Bowling Club, November, 1992. Some sixty of the Softball Pioneers attended this first tourney.
In March of 2006 the Tourney was held in Levin, and in conjunction with a 40th Reunion of the 1966 NZ Men's Team, that played in the first World Series Championship in Mexico and finished third.
The current Organizers are:-
Ron Rielly, 132 Boundary Road, Blockhouse Bay, Auckland
Bryan Furness, 1/3 Hokio Road, Hokio Beach, Levin.
The next tournament is due to be held in Auckland, first week of March, 2007. Any old players interested would be most welcome, and should contact Ron Rielly. You do not need to be a Bowler to come along. Meet old mates and have fun.
