The National Evergreens Tournament held at Wellington Ball Park, March, 2007, saw some tremendous games, and the many spectators who watched games over two days of wonderful weather, were treated to some topline Softball games, easily as good as you would see played anywhere. Exciting, full of action, great plays, and the standard did not reflect at all, that the participants were anywhere near “over the hill”!
Sixteen teams battled out over 4 sections, and the section winners were:- Hawkes Bay, Canterbury, Rotorua, and Wellington.
Wellington beat Hawkes Bay after a great battle 1 – 0, and the other semi-final saw Canterbury beat Rotorua 5 – 0. This was a very commendable effort for Rotorua, who reached the Semi's for their first time ever in an Evergreen Tournament.
The final between Wellington and Canterbury was a good a game as any that these two provinces have ever played in the past.
Canterbury behind in the run count 5 – 3, came up for their last bat and scored three runs in fine style to take the final 6 – 5. A great game.
So, Canterbury became the Champions and winners of the “Pop Chote Trophy” for the 6th time.
Wellington, as runner-up won the Chee Cup for the second time.
The next tournament will be held in Nelson, March 2008, dates to be advised.
