Black Sox team to North America
03/04/12

Defense will be a word the Black Sox players will hear a lot during their North America tour later in the year.

The tour is the last major preparation for the next year's world championship for the team and for the coaching staff that means players will be coming under the microscope more than they have in recent time, especially the pitchers with four named for the June-July tour.

"I am still of the opinion that we are giving up far too many runs," coach Eddie Kohlhase said.

"Perhaps a combination of pitchers not hitting good spots and or our defensive patterns not aligned to a strategy." ...more

Gus Leger, softball favourite, graduates, from Trevor Rowse
09/05/2012
Being a double international in two sports as welll as having an excellent brain and top personality should ensure that former Black Sox star Gus Leger is a success in his new teaching career.

Gus has graduated with a teaching degree from Waikato University, aided by a Prime Minister's scholarship which has also been granted to a few other top players.

Always one of the quickest softballers, Gud played with distinction for Marist and Auckland, as well as the Sox and then with Samoa in the Chirstchurch world series.

His international career started with the Junior Sox in the world series in Auckland in 1992-93 and he has still not played for Auckland in the nationals when he was chosen in the NZ side to tour the US, along with five other Marist men the following season.

The year after that he went with NZ to Canada after his first season with Auckland, and then to the USA in the build up toward the 1996 world series, but failed to make that team.

In 1998-99 the Auckland side failed to compete at the nationals but Gus was in the NZ touring party to Japan and played for Auckland the following season, then dropped out of contention until the Christchurch world championships when he and other Auckland players competed for Samoa.

After a spell doing other things, Gus was back in international contention in 2006-07 when Auckland won the nationals and he went on a tour to Canada. The following year Auckland won and Gus toured Argentina and then went to Samoa to play in the Pacific Cup before dropping out of contention before the 2009 world event.

Gus continued to inspire top quality from his Marist teammates despite the defection of most of the former stars but was missing in the past two seasons in Auckland play.

His other love, rugby, had him playing for both Samoa and Tonga in world cup tournaments, making him one of the most honoured of softballers.

The school which signs Gud Leger on will certainly get real value from a man who has given so much to sport and to others. (Note the softball themed tie in the photograph).
