Passing of John Manning

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of one of South Canterbury's great softballers; John Manning, who passed away last week after a long, courageous battle with cancer. On behalf of Softball NZ we would like to express our deepest sympathies.

John began his softball career while at primary school, joining his friend and neighbour Steve Timmings to play for Royals Softball Club.  At high school, he played for Timaru College at a number of inter school tournaments. John was a pitcher from a young age; a position he played for a number of years until the Royals club folded in 1981-82. He moved to the Celtic Club, continuing his softball days for a few more years.

John played for the South Canterbury Men at the Jefferies Cup in Canterbury, as well as in National Men's tournaments on many occasions.  He also attended a number of NZ Marist tournaments while playing for Celtic.

John was an inspiration to many young and upcoming players, mentoring both pitchers and catchers including our current president, Adrian Whiu. A private cremation is to take place in Timaru on 15 April.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.
