Passing of Martha Rush

Martha Rush (Yandall)

It is with much Sadness we acknowledge the passing of Martha on the 1 August 2021.

Martha arrived in NZ in 1957 at the age of 7.

Most of her softball was played at NZ Samoa Society Club. The club won 2 NZ Club National titles with Martha as their Catcher.

She bursted into the Auckland team at a young age in 1957-58. Martha played for Auckland for 20 seasons and was captain in her last year.

It was said that Martha was perhaps the only women who could have played successfully in the top men’s grades. She was Powerful, aggressive with a huge throw and big bat.

Martha played in 10 NZ National teams, toured Australia in 1973 and played International Australia and US Club sides in NZ.

In 1969 she was NZ Player of the Year and won the Wendy Rowse memorial Bat as top Batter at the NZ Nationals.

Martha was inducted into the NZ Softball Hall of Fame. Plus she was also made a Legend of Auckland Softball.

A truly memorable player in every way.
