Passing of Ima Hodges
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our scorers, Ima Hodges on Friday 17 February.
Ima became ill at the South Island Under 15 tournament in January and unfortunately passed away in Dunedin Hospital. Ima was the mother of our Chief Scorer Sandy Wallace and was our tournaments co-ordinator. Ima has been a stalwart of Otago Softball as well a long time scorer. She was an official scorer at the 2004 World Series in Christchurch.
Funeral details will be advised.
I'm sure all scorers will unite in sending Sandy and her family sincere condolences and strength in this sad time.
Thanks for the memories Ima - you're one in a million. Rest in peace.
A formal system for scoring softball games in NZ was established in 1968, and the first scorers’ manual was written in 1974. A score sheet and standard set of scoring symbols was developed, and a sophisticated qualification system established to ensure consistent scoring standards throughout the country. Since then we have come a long way. Official scorers are appointed to all games at every National Tournament and most club tournaments, and many teams have regular team scorers.
The NZ scorers qualification system involves a theory exam followed by a qualifying practical and a badge exam. The practical exams are sat at a National Tournament. |

We have about a hundred active Scorers’ Badge holders, and many other scorers going through the training scheme or just scoring for their teams, but we are always looking for more. If you would like to become involved, contact any of the people listed on these pages.
